Transforming Hemophilia Care: AcariaHealth Empowers Patients with Advanced Treatment Solutions

03/13/2025

March is Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month, a time to highlight and raise awareness about hemophilia, Von Willebrand Disease (VWD), and other inherited bleeding disorders. At AcariaHealth Specialty Pharmacy, we are committed to supporting patients living with these conditions by ensuring they have access to the latest treatments, proper education, and the comprehensive support necessary to manage their conditions and improve their quality of life.

A History of Advocacy and Progress
March has long been a month dedicated to raising awareness of hemophilia and bleeding disorders. It began in 1986 when President Ronald Reagan declared National Hemophilia Awareness Month, a pivotal moment that propelled advocacy for individuals living with this rare and often misunderstood condition. In 2016, the month was expanded to Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month to include a broader spectrum of inherited bleeding disorders, including Von Willebrand disease and platelet disorders, each requiring unique care and attention.

Understanding Bleeding Disorders
Bleeding disorders are genetic conditions that affect the body’s ability to form blood clots properly, leading to excessive bleeding. The most well-known bleeding disorder is hemophilia, but others, such as Von Willebrand disease (VWD) and platelet disorders, also affect millions worldwide.

Common Symptoms Include:

  • Frequent, prolonged, or unexplained bleeding
  • Excessive bruising Joint pain and swelling due to internal bleeding
  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
  • Uncontrolled bleeding after surgeries, dental work, or minor injuries

Recognizing these symptoms early and receiving proper care can significantly improve the management of these conditions, reducing complications and enhancing quality of life.

Hemophilia and Other Bleeding Disorders: Key Facts

  • Hemophilia A: Caused by a deficiency in factor VIII, affects about 1 in 5,000 to 10,000 male births worldwide.
  • Hemophilia B: Caused by a deficiency in factor IX, affects approximately 1 in 30,000 to 50,000 male births.
  • Von Willebrand Disease (VWD): The most common inherited bleeding disorder, estimated to impact about 1 in 100 people and affects both men and women.

Though hemophilia and other bleeding disorders primarily affect males, females can be carriers or, in rare cases, symptomatic.

Advancements in Hemophilia Care: A Brighter Future
Over the past 80 years, advancements in hemophilia and bleeding disorder treatments have been remarkable. The introduction of recombinant clotting factor therapies in the 1990s and the extended half-life products in the 2010s have significantly improved care. Today, patients have even more options, including non-factor therapies, subcutaneous dosing, and emerging gene therapies. These innovations not only improve the management of bleeding episodes but also help increase medication adherence and enhance patients' quality of life.

At AcariaHealth, we continue to champion these advancements and advocate for even more accessible and innovative treatments. We’re proud to be part of the ongoing journey to improve care for those affected by bleeding disorders.
