May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month
05/31/2022
Cystic fibrosis (CF)—an inherited disorder that impairs the lungs and digestive system through overproduction of mucus, sweat and digestive juices—affects nearly 35,000 people in the US. While there is currently no cure for CF, early diagnosis and effective treatments can help patients improve their quality of life by managing the symptoms and related health conditions that may develop because of CF. At Foundation Care, we recognize Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month in May in an effort to educate patients and caregivers about the unique health challenges of living with CF.
As a national specialty pharmacy and CF center of excellence, Foundation Care is devoted to helping our patients achieve the best possible health outcomes. Our pharmacists work closely with patients and prescribers to help manage their disease and reduce barriers that affect adherence. We also provide support through patient assistance programs, such as:
- Facilitating access to limited distribution CF medications
- Assisting with prior authorization and appeals
- Aiding benefits investigation and copay assistance enrollment support via copay cards and foundations
- Educating patients and caregivers on medications, equipment and condition management
- Creating and distributing original educational materials used by CF clinics nationwide, including our Huxi coloring adventure book series
In the words of External LinkDirector of Pharmacy Rachel Weichert, PharmD, BSN, “Treatment regimens for patients with CF can be complex and prescriptions may come from multiple prescribers. The pharmacists at Foundation Care aim to close gaps by ensuring prescribers are aware of the patient’s complete treatment regimen. This approach to care can prevent adverse events and optimize therapy benefits for our patients.”
Though there is no cure for CF, Foundation Care empowers our patients to live a full and healthy life through our comprehensive approach to CF care management. This May, during Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month, we pause to remind ourselves of the impact this disease has on our communities, and renew our commitment to provide relief and support for our CF patients and caregivers.
